A new poll shows Hillary Clinton trails Donald Trump by just 3 points in Mississippi, which could signal a shift in the state's presidential voting over the past 40 years.
Trump, according to
Politico, fares the worst of any Republican candidate in the race against Clinton. The last time a Democrat presidential candidate won the state was Jimmy Carter in 1976.
Last month's Mississippi Republican primary saw Trump defeat Texas Sen. Ted Cruz by 11 points. The latest Mason-Dixon poll numbers, however, demonstrate Mississippi voters aren't as willing to vote for the real estate mogul as they are for other GOP candidates in a general election.
Trump has 46 percent of the voters' support in the poll, compared to 43 percent for Clinton. That difference lies within the survey's margin of error.
In hypothetical matchups between Cruz and Clinton and Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Clinton, the two Republicans beat the former first lady by double digits, according to Politico.
Trump's strong lead in the delegate votes could take a hit Tuesday night if he loses the
Wisconsin primary. If he's unable to garner 1,237 delegate votes from primary season, the nomination could land on anyone — including
House Speaker Paul Ryan, who is not currently in the race for president.
