President Donald Trump Monday evening lauded the House Republicans for their 110-page report summarizing their take on the impeachment inquiry up until now, before asking if it is possible to "go to (the) Supreme Court" to stop the continuing proceedings.
"Just landed in the United Kingdom, heading to London for NATO meetings tomorrow," Trump tweeted. "Prior to landing I read the Republicans Report on the Impeachment Hoax. Great job! Radical Left has NO CASE. Read the Transcripts. Shouldn’t even be allowed. Can we go to Supreme Court to stop?"
Trump has threatened often to take matters to the Supreme Court should he be impeached, but the high court ruled in 1993 that the framers of the Constitution did not intend for the court to have the power to review impeachment proceedings and that impeachment and removal from office is up to Congress alone.
The ruling was made when the court rejected an impeached judge’s objection to the procedures used at his Senate trial, The New York Times reported last week, while pointing out that although the Chief Justice John Roberts would rule over an impeachment trial in the Senate, his role would be considered mostly ceremonial, as it would be up to lawmakers as to how the impeachment would be conducted.
In their report, House Republicans both defended Trump and accused Democrats of conducting an "orchestrated campaign" against the nation's political system with their to push to impeach the president.
