House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy falsely claimed during an interview broadcast Sunday night that a journalist changed a quote to make President Donald Trump look bad.
McCarthy was on "60 Minutes" to answer questions about Democrats' impeachment inquiry against Trump when he pushed back against a question posed by Scott Pelley.
Pelley was quoting from the infamous July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy when the two leaders were discussing U.S. military aid being sent to Ukraine.
After Zelenskiy asked about receiving another aid package, Trump said, "I would like you to do us a favor, though."
McCarthy then told Pelley, "You just added another word."
Pelley replied, "No, it's in the transcript."
McCarthy didn't appear to believe Pelley and asked, "He said 'I'd like you to do a favor though?'"
"Yes," Pelley said. "It's in the White House transcript."
Democrats launched the impeachment inquiry last week after a whistleblower raised concerns about the phone call and over whether Trump was trying to use his office to help his 2020 re-election effort.
Trump's critics claim he used the aid package to force Ukraine to investigate a Democratic National Committee server that was hacked during the 2016 campaign and the firing of a prosecutor who had been looking into corruption claims involving former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
The White House released what it said is the transcript of the phone call after the inquiry was announced and claims Trump did not say anything impeachable during the 30-minute conversation.
