Donald Trump has made strong border enforcement and deportations of illegal immigrants a main theme of his rise to the Republican nomination for president, but a new Fox News poll shows a surprisingly large number of his supporters would be even more likely to vote for him if he reversed course.
The figures are part of a poll showing Trump and Clinton now in a statistical tie.
Business Insider drilled down into the responses and found 48 percent of Trump's backers say they are more likely to vote for him if he "softens" his hard-line position on illegal immigration. Only 15 percent said a softening would make them less likely to vote for him, while 36 percent said it would make no difference.
Trump told Fox News' Sean Hannity last week he was open to "softening" his position, but, facing backlash from his own supporters, told CNN's Anderson Cooper the next day he might actually be "hardening" his position.
The GOP nominee met with Mexican president Pena Nieto on Wednesday before a planned speech in Arizona to detail his immigration plans.
