A controversial tweet posted through presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump's Twitter account "unfortunately" came from the campaign and was corrected immediately so no apology is necessary, senior aide Ed Brookover said Monday.
"I'm not sure who tweeted this out ... the campaign did [and] we corrected it," Brookover told
CNN "New Day" co-host Alisyn Camerota, noting that sometimes Trump posts his own tweets through the account, and sometimes he doesn't.
Trump was accused of anti-Semitism after the graphic, featuring the six-point star and a pile of cash along with Clinton's image, and the phrase "most corrupt candidate ever," appeared
in a tweet on his feed Saturday. It was deleted two hours later and replaced with the same meme, in which the star was swapped for a circle.
"There was never any intention of any anti-Semitism," said Brookover, who serves as the liaison between the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee. "Mr. Trump has consistently and loudly denounced the white supremacist groups. So this is one of those that's nothing to see here, let's move on, and talk about real issues like Hillary Clinton's three-hour interview with the FBI Saturday."
Further, Brookover said he does not believe that the person who posted the initial meme will be fired, and downplayed the news that the graphic first appeared on an Internet message board filled with anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and neo-Nazi ideology.
"These memes float around the Internet," said Brookover. "Not every six-sided star is a Star of David. There is no intent here at all. We corrected this tweet and have moved on."
But Camerota argued that "somebody had to go and find this," as it was not the result of a standard Internet search.
"It didn't have to be found on a message board," Brookover responded. "Those things get tweeted and retweeted and reposted on Facebook. It did not have to be found on any message board like that."
"It suggests, Ed, that somebody on the campaign is combing these message boards," she replied. "The only place, other than Mr. Trump's Twitter feed, that they can find the origin of it is one of these neo-Nazi message boards and the Twitter feed of somebody who traffics in this."
"There's no anti-Semitism in Mr. Trump's body, not one ounce, not one cell," said Brookover. "So we corrected this image, and it's time for us to move on. There is nothing, nothing, nothing about Mr. Trump that suggests anti-Semitism."
Further, said Brookover, Trump has denounced supremacist groups that back him, and will continue to denounce them.
"That's not part of our campaign," said Brookover. "He will continue to denounce them. That's not part of our campaign. We don't — we denounce their support. We denounce their views."
