President-elect Donald Trump described Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., as "a common-sense person" after the two men met during the weekend at Mar-a-Lago.
Fetterman and his wife, Gisele, traveled to Palm Beach, Florida, for an hour-long meeting with the president-elect.
"It was a totally fascinating meeting. He's a fascinating man, and his wife is lovely. They were both up, and I couldn't be more impressed," Trump told the Washington Examiner.
"He's a common-sense person. He's not liberal or conservative. He's just a common-sense person, which is beautiful."
Last week, Fetterman said Trump had invited him, and he accepted.
"I'm the senator for all Pennsylvanians — not just Democrats in Pennsylvania," he said in a statement, confirming news first reported by CBS News. "I've been clear that no one is my gatekeeper. I will meet with and have a conversation with anyone if it helps me deliver for Pennsylvania and the nation."
When asked Thursday about the expected meeting, Fetterman joked: "I'm angling to be named the Pope of Greenland." (Trump has suggested the U.S. should acquire Greenland for national security reasons.)
Trump told the Examiner that he and Fetterman discussed several topics, including support of Israel, the fate of U.S. Steel, southern border security, and, yes, Greenland.
Earlier this month, President Joe Biden blocked a Japanese company's takeover of U.S. Steel. Trump had already come out against the Nippon takeover.
Fetterman and his family live in Braddock, Pennsylvania, across the street from one of the oldest steel mills in the country. The Edgar Thomson Works has been an active mill since 1875.
The president-elect said he and Fetterman discussed how to make U.S. Steel successful again through tariffs.
"They're going to make people that have steel mills do very well, and the people that work at those steel mills are going to do very well," Trump told the Examiner.
Elected to the Senate in 2022, Fetterman is considered to be a potentially key lawmaker for Trump in advancing his agenda. He serves on the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee; the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; and the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Fetterman recently announced that he would support the GOP-led Laken Riley Act, a strict border measure.
Late last month, Fetterman said he "potentially" will vote "yes" on some of Trump's most controversial Cabinet picks like Defense Secretary-nominee Pete Hegseth and FBI Director-nominee Kash Patel.
