President Donald Trump reportedly said he doubts the federal government will pursue reparations for descendants of slaves — knocking down a goal of some Democrats.
"I don’t see it happening," the president told The Hill Monday.
The House Judiciary Committee held the first hearing on the issue in a decade earlier this month, and a few Democratic presidential candidates are warming to the idea.
"I think it’s a very unusual thing," Trump said of the possibility. "You have a lot of — it’s been a very interesting debate. I don’t see it happening, no."
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, reintroduced legislation this year initially crafted by former Rep. John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., calling for a study on reparations.
Among 2020 Democratic primary contenders, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, have voiced support for the bill.
