Donald Trump, after posting a
series of early morning tweets slamming potential Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, said Friday that her challenger for the nomination, Bernie Sanders, will probably lose, but he expects many of Sanders' supporters to support him.
"We have one thing in common," Trump told MSNBC's
"Morning Joe" program, after Nicole Wallace, the one-time communications director for President George W. Bush, asked him if he'd ever consider Sanders as a running mate.
"We know that the United States is being taken advantage of on trade deals. The difference between Bernie and myself is that I know how to make those trade deals fantastic and he doesn't. He has no clue."
But Sanders has "too many other things in the bag," said Trump, and he expects him to lose the nomination "because his system is rigged. "Bernie should run as an independent. His people, big percentages of the Bernie people are going to vote for Trump."
On the Fox News'
"Fox & Friends" program, though, Trump named one definite person for his vice presidential short list: Newt Gingrich.
"Might as well [tell him]," he told the program, after he was asked to tell Gingrich, who was coming onto the program later, that he is on the short list. "He's a great guy."
He went on to describe Gingrich as a "great supporter" and a "tremendous guy," and that he'd say "yes, because he's been such a supporter."
But Trump was coy on who else could be on the "short list," as he's waiting until the summer GOP convention to make his final decision known.
"Anybody that support me is on the short list as far as I'm concerned," Trump said. But when it comes to women on the list, he responded "I don't want to say. I'm going to make the announcement during the convention. I hope to be able to keep it a surprise."
He even joked that Clint Eastwood, another "great guy" would be "on the short list," after he was asked about the convention and Eastwood's appearance where he spoke to an empty chair.
"We'll put Clint on the short list," Trump joked with the show."We are going to try to make that convention number one, really we'll maybe it an important convention. But we're going to make it a little bit of fun and a little bit entertaining so people can enjoy it. But honestly, far more importantly we'll make some really hopefully great decisions."
But Trump remained angry at Clinton in his interviews on both shows, after she told
CNN on Thursday that she does not believe him to be qualified for the presidency.
For example, on Thursday, Clinton said that his proposal to ban Muslims promotes terrorism, and on Friday, Trump told Fox News that her comments is one of
"the dumbest things I ever heard. I mean, she's so ill-equipped to be the president. I just think it's absolutely dumb. In fact, if anything, it's just the opposite because they're going to have to learn we can't take this anymore."
He also slammed Clinton's plan to put husband Bill in charge of revitalizing the economy.
"I don't know, maybe he'll bring 'the Energizer' with him," Trump said, in a quick slam on the former president linked to a story in
The New York Post about Clinton's friend, Julie McMahon, part-owner of a business that reportedly benefited from the Clinton Global Initiative funds.
Also, Trump said, "he signed NAFTA . . . it's the worst deal we have, one of the worst deals we ever made this this country."
