President Donald Trump put Missouri and Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., squarely in his political crosshairs with a tweet Sunday he is heading to the state this week to help the GOP effort to add a Senate seat in next year's election.

President Trump's stalled agenda has been blamed on the narrow 52-46 edge (with two Independents) in the Senate, including the one-vote loss of the ballyhooed skinny repeal of Obamacare last month.

Next up on the agenda when Congress gets back in session Sept. 5 are the debt ceiling and potential tax reform, if not mere tax cuts, which President Trump tweeted McCaskill will be opposing.

Trump won Missouri by 19 points last November, which makes the state a target to add a Senate seat to the GOP. The state's other senator is Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., held off Democrat Jason Kander in 2016.

McCaskill's reelection bid shapes up to be one of the most intriguing in 2018 as she "already raised more than any other vulnerable Democratic incumbent in the second quarter of 2017," according to The Hill.

Newsmax White House correspondent John Gizzi reported in July that State Attorney General Josh Hawley, R-Mo., will lead the GOP push against McCaskill.
