President Donald Trump thanked North Korean leader Kim Jong Un regarding the release of three Americans who had been held in North Korea.

"We want to thank Kim Jong Un, who was really excellent… the fact we were able to get them out so soon was a tribute to a lot of things including a certain process that is taking place right now," Trump said, The Washington Post reported.

"This is a special night for these three really great people… and congratulations on being in this country," Trump said.

The three Americans, Kim Dong-chul, Tony Kim, and Kim Hak-song, who had been held captive for more than a year in North Korea, arrived at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday, where Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and first lady Melania Trump welcomed them.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted a "welcome home" video showing a clip of the hostages arriving in the U.S.
