President Donald Trump accused a Democratic congresswoman of lying about what he said to the widow of one of the soldiers slain in Niger earlier this month, saying she "totally fabricated" her claim.

He lashed out Wednesday morning on Twitter:

Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida, told CNN Tuesday night that she was in the car when the president called and talked to Myeshia Johnson, the pregnant widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, a Green Beret killed in an ambush in the African nation.

Wilson claimed that Trump, who was on speakerphone, told Johnson:

"He knew what he signed up for ... but when it happens it hurts anyway."

Johnson was left behind — the Pentagon is investigating whether dead or alive — after the ambush, leading to initial confusion that three, not four Green Berets had been killed.

Johnson's body was recovered two days later.
