U.S. Senator-elect Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., says it’s important to attack the coronavirus ''as it has been attacking us,'' but there are more positives ''if we go back to school and we play sports.''

''I think we’re doing a lot better in sports than we are in a lot of other areas,'' Tuberville, a retired football coach, said Wednesday during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s ''Spicer & Co.''

''I was keeping my fingers crossed back in August that we would let our young kids go play high school sports, number one, and then we get into college sports. There are so many people throwing negatives on why we should not do that. But I can tell you, you can see many more positives if we go back to school and we play sports. It’s important that we attack this virus as it has been attacking us. If it gives us an inch, we gotta take it.''

Tuberville, who had coaching stints at the University of Mississippi, Auburn University, Texas Tech University and the University of Cincinnati, also said it was important to ''protect yourself'' and ''use those regulations that the doctors have given us.''

''But playing sports is taking our minds off of it. I know it’s helped me and helped a lot of other people. Protect our kids knowing that this virus is still out there but we have to get back to everyday life,'' he added.

''You can’t continue to just shut people down. We can’t give that up.''

Tuberville defeated sitting Democratic Sen. Doug Jones on Nov. 3.
