President Donald Trump told supporters on Wednesday night that he wants to change the name of the North American Free Trade Agreement to the “USMC” pact, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Trump said at a private meeting with supporters before a fundraising dinner that he wants to change the agreement’s name, and issued a warning to Canada if the country doesn’t agree to his demands he will drop the “C” from the new name. The fundraiser, which was hosted by the Republican National Committee, raised $3 million for the Trump Victory fund. Dinner cost $35,000 per couple, and a small meeting with the president cost $100,000.
“USMC” is currently used as an abbreviation for the U.S. Marine Corps.
"They used to call it NAFTA. We're going to call it the United States-Mexico Trade Agreement, and we'll get rid of the name NAFTA," Trump told reporters last month, according to The Hill. "It has a bad connotation because the United States was hurt very badly by NAFTA for many years."
"We will see whether or not we decide to put up Canada or just do a separate deal with Canada, if they want to make the deal," he added.
