Texas Republican Jeb Hensarling announced Tuesday that he will retire and not seek re-election next year, The Dallas Morning News reported.
"Although service in Congress remains the greatest privilege of my life, I never intended to make it a lifetime commitment, and I have already stayed far longer than I had originally planned," Hensarling wrote to supporters.
The congressman, first elected in 2003, is the chairman of House Financial Services Committee.
Hensarling recently raised eyebrows in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, telling people who live in flood-prone areas that "God's telling you to move."
