Just two weeks before the election, Republican Ed Gillespie leads by 8 points in the Virginia governor's race, according to a new poll released Wednesday.
The Hampton University Center for Public Policy poll shows Gillespie leading Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam 41 percent to 33 percent. Twenty-seven percent either are undecided or did not respond.
Northam had led in most recent polls with a 5.8 percent average in Real Clear Politics' average of polls. The Hampton poll cut Northam's lead to 3.9 percent in RCP's average.
The hotly contested race has brought backing for Northam from former President Barack Obama and 2016 nominee Hillary Clinton. Gillespie has received support from former President George W. Bush.
The poll talked to 750 likely voters via cell and landline phones. It was conducted Oct. 18-22 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.
