Rep. Allen West, R-Fla. is known for his colorful remarks. And he didn’t hold back on Fox News Wednesday, proclaiming himself a “modern-day Harriet Tubman” who can free blacks from the Democratic Party “plantation,” Politico reports.

Tubman gained fame for helping to free slaves through a network of trains and safe houses -- the “Underground Railway” – in the 19th century. Now there is a “21st century plantation,” with the Democratic Party enslaving African-American voters, West said.

“The people on that plantation are upset because they’ve been disregarded, disrespected, and their concerns are not cared about,” he said. “I’m here as the modern-day Harriet Tubman to kind of lead people on the underground railroad away from that plantation into a sense of sensibility.”
