Three thousand hair stylists and barbers have had enough of California’s yo-yo "Wufluenza" lockdowns.
They have banded together to form a new organization of business owners and hair entrepreneurs: Open Safe California.
According to station KTXL in Sacramento, "Hundreds of salons and barbershops across the state are vowing to reopen indoors" starting this week.
All we can say is, it’s about dang time.
We don’t know whether it was Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s science-free assertion that wet beach sand was safe for standing upon, but dry sand was deadly.
Or Gov. Gavin Newsom’s edict that banned prayer for worshipers in churches due to the "WuFlu," but welcomed violent riots with no social distancing and few masks.
The bottom line is --- these professionals have had enough.
Some may contend the state is already allowing barbers and hair stylists to work. And it is.
After a fashion. And with the same moisture hang-ups that bedeviled beachgoers.
Wendy Diaz, owner of Salon W, explained, "(Governor Newsom) only granted dry haircuts outdoors. The majority of our clientele, I would say about 95%, are color clients. So, if we can’t do color, we can’t work."
And besides, what difference does wet or dry make to the "China virus"?
And who wants to have their hair cut on the sidewalk anyway?
This latest scissors embargo is particularly galling to Diaz because for a few short weeks California’s benevolent overlords did allow her to open.
Salon W was open for five glorious weeks and during that time served "more than 700 clients."
And what happened? Were customers rushed from the stylist’s chair direct to a ventilator?
Certainly not. According to Diaz, "None reported having the virus."
Diaz isn’t a virus denier. She knows it’s out there.
But, she also knows life must go on and she and the rest of Open Safe California will simultaneously be good citizens while defying the ban.
"We are probably the cleanest business in California, and we have been targeted for months now. And we have no explanation as to why. So, we’re just going to open."
Both clients and stylists will be wearing masks during their sessions.
The salon will also sanitize frequently and do temperature checks of clients and customers.
Sheri Reinhard, of Salon 6 Central, in Stockton knows there are risks that accompany refusing to surrender your rights. The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, acting as an arm of the "Flustapo," has warned of disciplinary actions or fines for stylists who don’t knuckle under.
Reinhard is prepared for any and all consequences, "You can threaten to fine us, OK. But at least I’ll have the money to pay the fine because I’ll be working. I have two children and a whole household I need to support."
