The CIA's Office of the Inspector General released a lengthy report compiled in 2005 that investigated the intelligence failures prior to the 9/11 attacks in 2001, as well as Saudi Arabia's possible connection to the attacks.
According to The Hill, 495-page report was released late Friday, and concluded that "no comprehensive strategic plan" was ever developed to deal with Osama bin Laden before the attacks in New York, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia. The report specifically criticized George Tenet, the head of the CIA before and after the attacks.
Notably, the report's final, 30-page section on Saudi Arabia is largely redacted.
It concludes that the IG's 9/11 Review Team "encountered no evidence that the Saudi Government knowingly and willingly supported al-Qa’ida terrorists," however it stated that it "defers consideration" of any alleged ties to the Department of Justice and the FBI.
"Many of the points of this finding relate to the investigative efforts on the Saudi intelligence presence in the United States and of Saudi officials’ contacts with terrorists in the country . . . The Team lacks access to the full range of investigative materials in FBI possession and is therefore unable to either concur or dissent on those points," it stated.
Relevant to the discussion of a possible link between Saudi Arabian officials and the terrorist organization is a still-classified, 28-page section of Congress' "Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities Before and After the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001."
As Vice News reported, Sen. Rand Paul introduced a bill on June 1 of this year that would require President Obama to declassify the pages, but it has yet to pass a vote.
Of the 19 hijackers involved in the 9/11 attacks, 15 were from Saudi Arabia.
