Actress Amanda Bynes was accused of shoplifting Wednesday when she allegedly left Barneys in New York City wearing a $200 hat without paying for it.

The store’s security guards let Bynes go after she told them she was being chased by fans and used the hat to cover her face, according to TMZ, which reported that she signed a no-trespass agreement saying she wouldn’t re-enter the store.

A subsequent story on TMZ said Bynes wanted to buy the hat but left her purse in the car.

The former star of “What a Girl Wants” has had several run-ins with the law, including hit-and-run charges, driving with a suspended license, DUI, and starting a fire in a driveway.

The 28-year-old actress was living with her parents, Lynn and Rick Bynes, for the past year, but she was released from her conservatorship in September.

Bynes recently told In Touch Weekly that she was unhappy living with her parents.

“I would have rather been in jail,” she said.

In Touch also said Bynes told a reporter that she believes she has a microchip in her head and wants “a dollar a day from every person who [is] reading my mind.”

Twitters users had mixed reactions.
