Amy Schumer, star of the movie "Trainwreck," has taken on numerous taboo subjects with her comedy, but she got serious Monday when she joined with her cousin, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, to introduce a proposal to limit gun ownership.

The Schumers held a joint news conference in New York to drum up support for the legislation. Amy explained that the gun issue became personal for her after the theater-shooting incident in Lafayette, Louisiana on July 23, reported Politico.

While watching Amy Schumer's movie "Trainwreck" at the Grand 16 Theatre, John Russell Houser allegedly stood up and starting shooting, killing two women, and injuring nine others, The Wrap reported.

Amy Schumer said her political cousin's proposal included "sensible measures" that she believed could protect the public.

"No one wants to live in a country where a felon, the mentally ill, or other dangerous people can get their hands on a gun with such ease," she said. "The time is now for the American people to rally for these changes."

"These are my first public comments on the issue of gun violence — I can promise you this: They will not be my last," she added.

The Schumers' call for gun restrictions was met with some considerable blowback on social media.

There were, however, some celebrities to came to the comedian's defense.
