Apolo Ohno, one of America's best known speedskaters, will join a new team – NBC Sports – as an analyst for the Olympics in Sochi, Russia in February.

NBC made the announcement Saturday during the Television Critics Association meeting in Beverly Hills.

Ohno, who recently retired, told The Associated Press that he will contribute to NBC's Olympics coverage of Alpine skiing and snowboarding.

"Hopefully I can give people a good show," Ohno said at the critics meeting, admitting it will be difficult to analyze the sports from the sidelines instead of competing. "I miss (speedskating) every day. That was my most difficult moment because you feel like you can do it one more time."

Ohno said he feels he can offer unique insight as an Olympic athlete, and he will not hesitate to ask tough questions.

"I've lived it. I've been there day in and day out," Ohno told the AP. "I can share that and gain that trust with other athletes. You have to (ask tough questions). At the end of the day I have a job."

Ohno is one America's most accomplished Winter Games athletes, winning his first speedskating gold medal at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. He also won a silver medal in those games.

In the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy, Ohno won gold in the 500-meter event and bronze medals in the 1,000-meter and 5,000-meter relay competitions.

Ohno temporarily swapped his ice skates for dancing shoes the next year, as he and dance partner Julianne Hough beat out 'N Sync's Joey Fatone to win the fourth season of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars.”

In the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Ohno won silver medals in the 1,500-meter and 1,000-meter races, breaking the record for the most medals won by an American Winter Olympian.
