An 8-month-old baby girl ejected from her family's car in an accident was found safe and alive in a storm drain 25 feet away.
The accident occurred Friday night on Interstate 30 in Texarkana, Arkansas. After the car was sideswiped, it flipped over and crashed. Witnesses were unable to find the infant until first responders heard a noise coming from the storm drain.
“The baby ... was sitting up and looking up at us waiting for us to pull her out,” Texarkana firefighter Josh Moore told KSLA. “There had to be some kind of divine intervention for her to end up being OK.” The baby had only a scratch on her forehead despite being 25 feet away from the vehicle.
Firefighters believe the baby rolled down a hill into the median's storm drain, where it took three of them to get her out.
All four passengers and the driver of the car were taken to the hospital, but the four passengers including the baby girl were later released. The driver of the car is still in the hospital recovering, but her injuries are not serious.
“So many times, we go out and things aren’t OK . . . and just during the holidays here to have a positive just feels good,” fire captain Charlie Smith told KTLA.
The baby was reportedly not secured properly in her car seat, but the family has not been charged or cited. The driver of the 18-wheeler that sideswiped them has been cited for improperly changing lanes.
