Two Berlin homeless men were the target of an attack Sunday night in which someone set them on fire shortly before midnight at a suburban train station.

The victims, ages 62 and 47, were doused with a flammable liquid and then set ablaze at Berlin's Schöneweide train station, the BBC reported.

The men were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries; the 47-year-old may be in a coma, the BBC reported.

Passers-by put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher taken from a nearby food kiosk and a witness called the fire department, German newspaper Bild reported, according to The Independent.

No suspect has been identified and the motive for the attack is unknown, but the attack is being investigated as attempted murder, according to the BBC.

Photographs of the scene revealed the charred bedding and clothes belonging to the victims and a partially melted shopping cart, The Independent said.

A similar attack happened in Berlin a year ago, when a 21-year-old man lit a fire next to the head of a another man sleeping on a park bench. The aggressor was caught, tried, and convicted and is serving a two-year, five-month sentence,

There are an estimated 10,000 homeless people in Berlin.

People on social media were horrified that someone would target the homeless men.
