Bob Hastings Dies: 'McHale's Navy' Star Succumbs to Cancer at 89

Actor Bob Hastings, who played Lt. Elroy Carpenter on "McHale's Navy," died at his Burbank, California, home on Monday at age 89.

Hastings, a World War II veteran, had a lengthy battle against prostate cancer, Reuters reported.

Hastings began his career in radio at age 11. He work includes voicing Archie Comics character Archie Andrews from 1945 to 1953. He performed in "All in the Family" in the 1970s and did voice work for "Batman: The Animated Series" in the 1990s.

Hastings is survived by his brother, Don Hastings, who played Dr. Bob Hughes on the soap opera "As The World Turns."

"I miss him. He was a great guy. He was a good father and a good husband," Don Hastings told the Burbank Leader. "That's hard to be in show business.

Other survivors include four children, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Hastings’ son Michael told the Burbank Leader that his father’s lessons live on through his children and grandchildren.

"It seems my dad's legacy is continuing. He told us we have to give back, it's not ours for the taking," Michael said. "He was a true American."
