Boston Snow Piles Linger After Region's Record-Breaking Winter

Boston’s record-breaking snowfall earlier this year has left the city with massive snow piles filled with trash, including one as tall as a three-story building.

Even though warm temperatures are finally coming to the eastern city, the piles the Boston Globe called “unsightly, filled with garbage and debris,” don’t seem to be leaving anytime soon. The three-story snow pile in the Seaport District had been 75-feet high, though, so they are slowly diminishing.

Slowly, being the key word.

“The fact that it’s still there is a science experiment waiting to happen,” Michael Dennehy, commissioner of the city’s Department of Public Works, told the Globe, adding that the mound looks like a trash pile.

As the ice melts and seeps away, freeing the trash, Dennehy told the newspaper that crews are cleaning up, and they’ve already cleared 85 tons of trash from the pile.

“It’s vile,” he said. “We’re finding crazy stuff — bicycles, orange cones that people used as space savers — the funniest thing they found was half of a $5 bill. They’re looking for the other half still.”

City spokesperson Denise Taylor told the Globe about another area with two piles of snow that look like “a wintertime snow pile’s evil twin. It’s dirty, and there’s a reasonable amount of trash there.”

Many of the filthy snow piles don’t even resemble their original snowy whiteness:

A Weather Channel meteorologist posted this photo of the lingering snow:

Snowfall across the state of Massachusetts broke records over the winter. The Logan International Airport, around mid-May, reported 108 inches of snow in the winter months, the Globe said. Most of that snow came after Jan. 23, when the city had recorded only 4.5 inches of snow.
