A city bus veered to avoid a pedestrian and crashed into a home in Hempstead, N.Y., on Wednesday night, killing a 6-year-old boy who was getting ready for bed.

The boy, David Granados, was just going into his bedroom at 9:30 p.m. while his 7-year-old brother was already in bed, according to ABC News. The bus had jumped a curb and drove through the Granados’ front lawn before plowing into the multi-family house.

The victim was immediately hit by debris from the crash and pinned against the bedroom wall where firefighters later found him, police said. He was pronounced dead one hour later at Winthrop University Hospital.

His brother, whose name was not released by police, sustained only minor injuries from the crash.

Despite swerving, the bus still struck the 35-year-old pedestrian, who was taken to a local hospital. Authorities would not comment on his condition or provide his name.

“The bus driver sees the pedestrian. Blows his horn three times as a warning. The pedestrian keeps walking towards the moving bus, who is travelling at the proper rate of speed with the green light,” according to Nassau County Police Inspector Kenneth Lack.

Of the 11 bus passengers, eight were taken to area hospitals with non-critical injuries.

The bus driver’s identity and medical condition were not released.

The incident is being investigated, though police are not considering it a criminal act.

The Nassau Inter County Express bus system said it is also investigating the deadly crash and cooperating fully with local authorities.

The bus was impounded and will undergo brake and safety checks during an inspection by the Public Transportation Safety Board.
