An 11-year-old British boy dressed as “Fifty Shades of Grey” character Christian Grey for World Book Day, causing school officials to bar his participation in event photographs.

Liam Scholes dressed in a suit and was carrying an eye mask and cable ties. The school called the costume "inappropriate."

His mother, Nicola Scholes, who is a teacher, said the reaction to the costume has been blown out of proportion, and she told the BBC her son had not read the erotic novel that features bondage.

"Liam was advised to dress as James Bond ... but [he] was a promiscuous character who kills people," she told the BBC. "Personally, I'm more offended by a murderer."

Scholes told BBC Radio 5 Live she considered the costume a joke. “All the people found it hilarious. They all knew who it was. He did not receive any negative comments from any other child at school. They were all really amused by it,” she said.

Scholes said on the radio that the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie has been advertised all over television, and he was asked to pick a character right around when the movie came out. The BBC Radio 5 Live interviewer asked if Liam was aware of the content of the book and the "nature," and Scholes explained that Liam knew it had sex in it.

"It has been massively blown out of proportion," she said. "It was meant as a laugh and tongue-in-cheek. ... It just baffled me that there was children allowed to walk around with toy guns in school. Certainly I find that more offensive than cable ties,”

Social media posted loudly about their opinion of the boy’s costume:
