Things are heating up in Britney Spears' conservatorship case.
The pop star has been locked in a legal battle with her father, Jamie Spears, over who will oversee her personal and financial affairs and now the conservatorship, which has been in place since 2008, has been extended until February 2021, according to court documents filed on Wednesday and obtained by Fox News.
Drama unfolded last week when Jamie filed a petition requesting that he and attorney Andrew Wallet regain power as conservators. In 2008, Wallet was appointed permanent co-conservator of Britney's estate but voluntarily stepped down in March 2019 while Jamie, who was named permanent conservator of her person, relinquished his role in September 2019 due to health reasons.
Various reports have emerged alleging that Jamie clashed with Britney’s children.
Britney is opposing Jamie’s move to be reinstated as conservator and wants Jodie Montgomery, a licensed conservator who took Jamie's position when he stepped down, to act as conservator.
Jamie's petition came in response to court documents filed on Monday by Britney's lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III, claiming that the "Toxic" singer "strongly opposed" her father remaining her sole conservator. Instead, Britney "strongly prefers" that Montgomery remain the sole conservator of her affairs.
A hearing is set for Oct. 14 and Ingham was authorized to file a petition by Sept. 18.
"We are now at a point where the conservatorship must be changed substantially in order to reflect the major changes in her current lifestyle and her stated wishes," Ingham said in the filing.
