“Cadillac can put it on showroom floors, offer special discounts and lease packages, and even negotiate sales well below the sticker price,” McIntyre wrote. “No matter. The Escalade will sit on dealer lots with barely a buyer to look at them.”
CNN notes the luxury SUV market has been shrinking for some time, with large SUVs making up less than 10 percent of all luxury SUV sales. A decade ago, they made up 27 percent of all luxury SUV sales.
Cadillac unveiled its new model on Tuesday. Critics were wowed by the SUV.
The vehicle retains is girth, weighing about 5,600 pounds, and it is powered by a new 6.2-liter, V-8 engine with 420 horsepower and 460 pounds of torque. Automotive news says the six-speed automatic should be replaced by an 8-speed automatic by mid-2015. The SUV should hit showrooms next spring.
The Escalade, manufactured in Arlington, Texas, was introduced into the market with the 1999 model and it was last redesigned in 2007. This is the fourth generation of the vehicle, and it can seat eight in an interior centered around a entertainment system that includes an 8-inch screen that works similar to an iPad.
CNN, noting that Escalades are popular with car thieves, says the new vehicle includes sensors for intruders, breaking glass, and sudden inclines that can tell when the vehicle is being lifted or towed.
“The 2015 Escalade is completely new and elevated in design and technology,”
the Dallas Morning News quoted Bob Ferguson, senior vice president of global Cadillac, as saying at the unveiling in New York. “The clear objective is to once again assume the leadership position among luxury SUVs.”
Pricing of the revamped SUV hasn’t been announced. Escalades now start at just under $68,000.
