NBC on Monday released the first promotional poster for its upcoming live production of "The Sound of Music," featuring country star Carrie Underwood in the iconic role of Maria von Trapp.

It was announced about three weeks ago that Underwood will star in the three-hour live television event as Maria, a young governess who falls in love with Capt. Georg von Trapp (to be played by "True Blood" actor Stephen Moyer) after he hires her to take care of his seven children.

The network also announced this week that three Tony winners would be signing on for "The Sound of Music" — Audra McDonald will play Mother Abbess, Laura Benanti will star as Elsa Schrader, and Christian Borle will portray Max Dettweiler.

As for Underwood, the Oklahoma native rose to fame in 2005 when she won season four of "American Idol." Her full-length debut, "Some Hearts," followed. Since then she has clocked 17 No. 1 country hits on Billboard and was even a 2009 inductee into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

She has some acting experience, having appeared in a 2010 episode of the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother." She made her film debut in 2011's "Soul Surfer," which told the true story of surfer and shark attack victim Bethany Hamilton.

"The Sound of Music" premiered on Broadway in 1959 and was followed up by the 1965 film version, which starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and won five Academy Awards.

"The Sound of Music" three-hour live event will air Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
