Most stories we hear about celebrities involve scandalous behavior, not random acts of kindness and courage. However, several stars have acted as heroes, saving people's lives in real-life crises. John Malkovich once helped stop a man from bleeding out and Vin Diesel pulled a family from the wreckage of a car before it burst into flames, Best Life reported.
Here are 10 celebrities who are real-life heroes according to Insider:
- Tom Hardy. In 2017 the "Venom" actor showed his bravery by chasing and catching a thief. Two thieves had stolen a moped and crashed it into a car. One then attempted to flee but Hardy gave chase. He was able to catch the assailant and hand him over to the police.
- Tom Cruise. Not only did Tom Cruise swoop in to help a woman injured in a hit-and-run, he also paid for her medical bills. The incident took place in 1996 in Santa Monica and Cruise was passing by when the crash occurred. The actor called 911 and stayed with the woman until emergency services arrived. He then paid for her $7,000 medical bill.
- Kate Winslet. When lightning struck Richard Branson's house in 2011 and set it on fire, Kate Winslet helped save the billionaire's mother. Winslet and her family were staying at the $70 million home in the Caribbean when the fire erupted. Winslet did not hesitate to help the 90-year-old woman escape.
- Ryan Gosling. When a woman accidentally stepped into oncoming traffic, it was Ryan Gosling who pulled her back and stopped her from getting hit.
- Harrison Ford. The iconic actor often plays the role of a hero onscreen and in real-life. As a volunteer search and rescue pilot, he has helped stranded hikers on numerous occasions. This includes a 13-year-old boy who was lost in Yellowstone National Park. Ford also saved a woman who lost control of her vehicle and drove off the side of a road. He helped her from the car and stayed by her side until the paramedics arrived.
- Jamie Foxx. Brett Kyle has Jamie Foxx to thank for his life. The actor was driving through California when he saw a car veer off the road, flip several times, and burst into flames. Assisted by an off-duty EMT, Foxx hauled Kyle from the car wreckage.
- Steve Buscemi. The actor, who previously worked as a firefighter, volunteered to assist in the aftermath of September 11. He spent several days at a firehouse in Little Italy, helping to search for survivors.
- Zoe Saldana. When an elderly woman was injured in a car accident, it was Zoe Saldana who helped her out of the car and called 911. According to onlookers, the actress even went back to the wrecked car to retrieve the woman's handbag and sweater, then stayed with her until paramedics arrived.
- Gerard Butler. While picnicking at Taymouth Castle in Scotland in 1997, Gerard Butler heard someone calling for help. The actor went to investigate and found a 14-year-old boy drowning in a nearby river. Butler dove in and pulled the boy to safety.
- Patrick Dempsey. Not only did he save lives on screen in "Grey's Anatomy," but in real life too. Dempsey happened to witness a car accident and immediately sprang into action. He used a crowbar to open the doors of the wrecked car and hauled Weston Masset to safety.
