Charity Hospital in New Orleans has been rumored to be haunted, and some on social media said a ghost was behind an eerie light recently seen coming from the facility abandoned since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

What authorities found when investigating the strange light were boards wrapped with lights near a window, just like a a Christmas tree, said WDSU-TV

A spokesperson for the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center said someone broke into the 1930s-era hospital and placed the lights in front of the window.

"We are treating this as a break-in," Leslie Capo, director of information services at LSU Health Sciences Center, told WWL-TV.

A photo of the mystery lights posted on Facebook by Lisa Walley Staggs was shared more than 22,400 times.

"It's really pretty and little creepy," said Mike Arbon, who works at the nearby Tulane Medical Center. "It gave me chills when I saw it and, of course, made me think of my brother, who passed away at Charity Hospital."

Others went to Twitter to voice their suspicions.

Social media comments about Charity Hospital being haunted date back to at least 2009.
