Charlie Sheen has begun production on a movie that will stream as an original production on Sony’s streaming service, Crackle.

“Mad Families” tells the story of three families of different races who find themselves in the same camping space on July Fourth weekend. After trying unsuccessfully to share the space, they decide to go through a series of competitions to determine who can stay. Sheen will play Charlie Jones, described by Variety as a “lovable man-child with a heart of gold and a unique way of looking at the world.”

The comedy is Sheen’s first project since announcing he is HIV-positive 10 months ago. He will star opposite Leah Remini, Naya Rivera (“Glee”), and Finesse Mitchell.

Sheen also will be an executive producer on the project. The screenplay was written by David Spade and Fred Wolf. Wolf will direct the film.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Sony Pictures TV executive and general manager of Crackle Eric Berger said in a statement on Tuesday, “It’s great to be back in business with Fred, and to have Charlie on board. The combination of Fred’s unique comedic voice and Charlie’s sharp wit and gift for physical humor is sure to be ‘winning.’”

Sheen had previously starred in the TV comedies “Anger Management” and “Two and a Half Men.” He had several stints in rehab for drugs before announcing his HIV status. He is also starring with Whoopi Goldberg in the independent action film “Nine Eleven,” chronicling the lives of five people trapped in an elevator at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

“Mad Families” began production last week in Los Angeles.
