Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron recently had neck surgery to fix a vertebrae she broke in 2005, a source told Us Weekly.

Theron, 38, wore a high neckline dress at Variety's fifth annual Power of Women program at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel on Friday to cover the base of her neck.

"Charlize got injured on a set and broke vertebrae years ago," a source said. "It's been bothering her a lot lately so she had surgery to correct it and they had to go through her neck."

The injury reportedly occured when she hit her head while shooting. While Theron has not spoken publicly about the injury or the surgery, sources say she is fine.

"She's got a small Band-Aid on her neck," a second source told Us Weekly. "She kept fussing with the white scarf. She (was) wearing to cover it, but it was poking out and visible."

Theron joined actresses Kerry Washington, Nicole Kidman, Amy Poehler, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Hudson and Elizabeth Banks for the event.

Born in South Africa, the former teen model won a best actress Academy Award in 2004 for playing serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the movie "Monster." She was nominated again in 2006 for her role in "North Country."

Theron got her first lead playing opposite Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves in the 1997 movie "The Devil's Advocate." She went on to star in such movies as "Cider House Rules" in 1999, the remake of "The Italian Job" in 2003, "Hancock" in 2008 and "Young Adult" in 2011.

Her most recent movies include "Prometheus" and "Snow White and the Huntsman," both released last year. She will star opposite "Dark Knight Rises" star Tom Hardy in a reboot of the 1980s Mad Max movies in 2014 with the film "Mad Max: Fury Road."

She adopted her son, Jackson, in March 2012.
