A Chinese video about India posted online by a media outlet generally regarded as an official mouthpiece of the Chinese government, sparked a backlash in an ongoing dispute between the two countries.
The video, called "7 Sins of India," depicted a Chinese man mockingly portraying an Indian man, wearing a turban and talking with an exaggerated expression, CNN reported. It appeared on several social media channels of Xinhua News, and seemed to attack India’s objections to China building a road in a disputed area.
Both Indians and Chinese as well as others around the world denounced the video as racist, and Indian media released a video on Friday in retaliation showing an animated Chinese president Xi Jinping dancing to Gangnam Style and dressed as Winnie the Pooh, CNN reported.
The territory in which the road was being built is in Bhutan, an ally of India, and is near the "chicken’s neck," a vital throughway between Delhi and its far northeastern territory, CNN reported.
The conflict in that area started on June 16 when Indian border guards allegedly tried to obstruct the mountain road’s construction by the Chinese, stating that they didn’t want the Chinese to change the status quo in the region, CNN reported.
In the video, the Chinese compared the building of that road to a man "building a path in his garden," CNBC reported. The video also called Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration "asleep," "thick-skinned," and said that the actions of India in the border area were like "a robber who had just broken into your house and refused to leave."
Tensions between China and India have been rising for some time now, and have led to skirmishes on land and sea in which soldiers on both sides were injured, Financial Times reported.
