Five people were shot early Sunday morning as R&B bad boy Chris Brown was performing at a raucous private gathering at a San Francisco Bay area club.

The Associated Press reported police as saying Brown, surrounded by a dozen people on stage, escaped injury in the shooting.

The San Jose Mercury News said the shooting happened near San Jose's Fiesta nightclub, where Brown was performing for a private party.

A video posted on YouTube showed several minutes of audience members screaming and ducking for cover as a some kind of melee in the club was followed by several shots ringing out, followed by even more panic.

Cellphone video posted online by fans appears to show Brown wincing as the shots rang out nearby, then being ushered away by others.

Police say all five people injured in the shootings are expected to survive.

Police said they have detained several people, but no information was immediately available later Sunday on the motive in the shootings.
