Chris Christie's hug with Jerry Jones in the Dallas Cowboys owner's suite after Sunday's NFL playoff victory over the Detroit Lions may have been awkward but it's sure generating buzz for the consensus presidential contender on social media and in the political echo chamber.
Christie, a longtime Dallas Cowboys fan, angered some New Jersey voters who are hardened Cowboys opponents and perhaps proxies for the governor's political opponents. And it doesn't help that Christie's adopted team has come up a winner while the local New York Giants, Jets and Philadelphia Eagles are losers.
Monday on WFAN's "Boomer & Carton" radio show, Christie made no apology about his Cowboys fandom and his hug with Jones,
according to The Business Insider.
"When the Cowboys are losing the last game of the year, the last three seasons not to make the playoffs, there's nobody getting on social media giving me a hard time about being a Cowboys fan. So we all know what this is about," Christie said on the show.
When asked if he felt dissed when he was apparently left hanging for a high-five, Christie dismissed that as well.
"It was pandemonium in there," said Christie. "It is difficult to describe the level of intensity in the Jones' box during these games ... Believe me, I'm sitting in Jerry Jones' box, how do I feel dissed?"
Christie's brother, Todd Christie, a self-described Giants fan, came to his brother's defense, acknowledging the governor's lifelong love affair with the Cowboys on Facebook.
"To all of those non Cowboy fans who have their panties in a ringer because the Governor of NJ is a Cowboys fan – GET A LIFE," Todd Christie wrote on Facebook. "The Gov has been a Cowboys fan for his entire life and ALL of you would sit with the owner of your favorite team in a heartbeat if given the chance."
"I'm a Giants fan – we are sitting home for the fourth straight year. Eagles fans – possibly you should worry more about the fact that your sorry a** team has never won a Super Bowl and less about who's rooting for which team. I mean crazy pathetic posts."
