Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, whose movies include “The Avengers” and the coming films “Blackhat” and “In the Heart of the Sea,” was named as People magazine’s sexiest man alive.

Hemsworth told People that he and his wife, actress Elsa Pataky, thought the recognition was “pretty funny.”

“I think you've bought me a couple of weeks of bragging rights around the house,” Hemsworth said. “I can just say to her, ‘Now remember, this is what the people think, so I don't need to do the dishes anymore, I don't need to change nappies. I'm above that. I've made it now.’”

Previous honorees include Adam Levine, Channing Tatum, Bradley Cooper, and Ryan Reynolds.

Michelle Green is credited with beginning the “sexiest man alive” phrase at People in a 1985 article about Mel Gibson, Slate reported.

“It’s something that I sort of hate having unleashed upon the world,” Green told Slate.

Hemsworth was introduced as the sexiest man alive on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

When asked what it felt like, he joked: “I’m most excited about the ‘alive’ portion of that statement. And the ‘sexy’ is a bonus, and I’m excited.”

Reactions on Twitter varied.
