Christopher Dorner, the fugitive ex-LAPD cop accused of murdering three people this week, including a police officer, claims his shooting spree was revenge for getting fired from the police department, according to
a rage-filled manifesto he posted online that details his vendetta.
A manhunt for the 33-year-old heavily arm former officer continued Friday in Big Bear Lake, about 100 miles east of Los Angeles.
Police suspect him in the weekend double murder of a former police captain's daughter and her fiancé, as well as the Thursday shootings that targeted other law enforcement officers.
Authorities named Dorner as the prime suspect in a news conference on Wednesday, claiming they recovered a lengthy online "manifesto," in which Dorner made multiple threats against different people, including members of the LAPD.
"I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty," he wrote. "You will now live the life of the prey."
His long-term grudge appears to stem from the 2009 firing from the LAPD after he was accused of making false statements against another officer.
"The department has not changed since the Rampart and Rodney King days. It has gotten worse," Dorner wrote. "I know I will be vilified by the LAPD and the media. Unfortunately, this is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name."
The gist of the posting focuses on the incident that Dorner says led to his dismissal. Dorner writes about an episode in which he saw a fellow officer use excessive force to kick a suspect who had schizophrenia. Dorner claims he reported the incident to the internal affairs department, which led to a lengthy investigation, but the matter ultimately resulted in his firing for making false statement.
"The LAPD's actions have cost me my law enforcement career. They cost my naval career. … I've lost my relationship with my mother and sister because of the LAPD. I've lost a relationship with close friends because of the LAPD. In essence, I've lost everything because the LAPD took my name and new (sic) I was INNOCENT!!!" he wrote.
Dorner signed off his manifesto with a violent warning.
"You are aware that I have always been the top shot, highest score, an expert in rifle qualifications in every unit I've been in," he wrote. "I will utilize every bit of small arms training, demolition ordnance, and survival training I've been given."
Dorner is accused of fatally shooting a newly engaged couple in Irvine on Sunday as part of a revenge plot against law enforcement. One of the victims was the daughter of Randal Quan, LAPD's first Asian-American captain who was mentioned by name in Dorner's manifesto. Quan was also the lawyer who represented Dorner in front of the job board that fired him.
Dorner also reportedly shot at four police officers early Thursday morning in two separate encounters. One officer was killed and another was severely wounded.
