A cocaine shipment worth more than $16.8 million was discovered Monday in boxes of bananas sent to several Berlin-area Aldi supermarkets.
Employees at 14 Aldi locations found the drugs stuffed in deliveries from Colombia. Police said they think they were accidentally delivered to the stores.
"Apparently there was a logistical mistake somewhere along the line,"
police spokesman Stefan Redlich told Agence France-Presse.
Redlich said investigators are working to figure out where the drugs were supposed to go.
Police spokesman Michael Gassen
told The Associated Press that the cocaine was tucked in black plastic packs of one kilogram (about two pounds) each and secured between the bananas. He said it was the largest cocaine find in Berlin.
This isn't the first time such a mishap has occurred in Germany. In January 2014, grocery staff found a total of 310 pounds of cocaine, worth about $6.7 million. In that case, Olaf Schremm, the head of Berlin's anti-drugs squad, said the banana crates traveled through the German port of Hamburg and were
discovered by "pure chance," according to The Guardian.
