A fox that attacked and injured five people in Connecticut, including a second grader on a school playground, tested positive for rabies on Tuesday.

All of the victims were released Monday afternoon from an East Windsor hospital after being treated for minor injuries and given rabies vaccinations on Monday afternoon, ABC affiliate WABC reported.

The fox was killed by police who were called to Broad Brook Elementary School after student Evan Witzke was attacked around 11:30 a.m. Physical education teacher Elissa Daniele saw the fox bite the second grader, and sprang into action.

"I noticed a fox begin to go after a student and I thought, 'Oh no, that's not going to happen,"' Daniele told CBS News.

She grabbed the fox by the throat and wrestled it to the ground while other staffers helped her trap it in a recycling container. Unfortunately, some of the staff were also bitten in the process.

"Oh yeah, it hurt. It hurt a lot," Daniele said. "That's my student. I would do anything for my students so I had to do it. I didn't want that fox to hurt anyone."

Craig Witzke, Evan's father, said he was grateful to the staff for their selfless rescue of his son – who was in good spirits by the afternoon.

"I'm feeling really good because I took medicine and I got shots," he told NBC Connecticut. "My teacher got it off me and then I got up and ran away."

Det. Matthew Carl of the East Windsor Police Department said that he believes the fox was the same one that bit a woman and her dog outside of her parent's house earlier in the day.

"The second I opened the door, I felt something bite on my leg," Danielle Bopko told Fox CT.

"I realized it’s not a cat. It was just big and black and it was latched on and I kicked it into the wall. It was a fox."
