Former talk show host Cyndy Garvey, ex-wife of MLB legend Steve Garvey, is suing the University of California, Los Angeles, claiming she was duped into enrolling into its master's program,
TMZ reported.
Garvey, who co-hosted "The Morning Show" with Regis Philbin in the 1980s, said two UCLA officials asked if she would like to enroll in a master's program at the UCLA School of Public Health.
Garvey said she initially had no interest in going back to school, but one of the officials, a former director of the executive master's program, offered to fund her education because the school would benefit from her "celebrity status." She said the officials told her the costs would be split 50/50 between a rich alumnus and the school.
Garvey said she completed the program in 2009, fulfilling all obligations, then was hit with a $20,000 tax lien in 2012 for unpaid debt to the university, according to the suit filed in L.A. County Superior Court by entertainment attorney Keith Fink.
She claimed she never signed any document agreeing she would pay for her education, and is suing the Los Angeles school for more than $25,000.
A rep for UCLA told TMZ the school had "no comment at this time."
Garvey jumped to fame after she married her college sweetheart, the baseball player. When Steve Garvey became a baseball star in celebrity crazed L.A., Cyndy Garvey also became a celebrity.
Their image of the happy couple fell apart after he retired from baseball and became involved in lawsuits brought by business partners and various lovers. She hit the headlines when she was jailed on contempt of court charges for preventing him from seeing his children.
