British Prime Minister David Cameron made a heartfelt plea to the people of Scotland this week, asking them not to tear the United Kingdom apart in next week's vote on Scottish independence.
Cameron spoke directly to the people this week at a meeting in Edinburgh, telling that that, while they may be upset with the current U.K. leadership, their votes will have a long-term effect on the future of Scotland.
"Sometimes people say to me why do you feel so strongly about it? . . . My answer to that is that I care far more about my country than I do about my party,"
Cameron said, according to The Guardian. "I care hugely about this extraordinary country, this United Kingdom that we have built together. I would be heartbroken if this family of nations we have put together — and we have done such amazing things — was torn apart."

Scotland has been part of the United Kingdom for 300 years, but things could change when voters go to the polls Sept. 18 to decide whether to sever the union. Polls have long showed that Scots want to remain a part of the U.K., but a new survey released over the weekend saw a surge in
support for independence, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Cameron reiterated his feelings in a Daily Mail piece published Tuesday.
"As the people of Scotland put pen to ballot paper next week, you will be writing the U.K.’s future in indelible ink. It’s a momentous decision: there will be no going back," he wrote.
"There is a lot that divides us, but there's one thing on which we agree passionately: the United Kingdom is better together. At this crucial moment, we want to be listening and talking to voters about the huge choices they face. Our message to the Scottish people will be simple: 'We want you to stay.'"
