The "Day Without Immigrants" protests are expected to impact scores of business around the country, with many planning to close Thursday in support of immigrants.
The protests, which reportedly will include a noon demonstration in front of the White House, are in response to President Donald Trump's crackdown on immigration, USA Today reported. That includes a temporary immigration travel ban of residents in seven countries and plans to build a wall along the U.S. southern border with Mexico.
Janet Murguia, president and chief executive of the Latino civil rights group the National Council of La Raza, supported the protests in a Twitter post Wednesday.
Celebrity chef Jose Andres, who had pulled out of Trump's D.C. hotel restaurant, announced that he will close his restaurants Zaytinya, Oyamel, and all three locations of Jaleo Thursday in support of the protests, the Washington City Paper reported.
The closures are a part of a list of more than 30 restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area that will be closed Thursday, stated the City Paper.
In Chicago, celebrity chef Rick Bayless tweeted that he will close four of his restaurants Thursday to support the movement.
WLS-TV reported that 17 businesses in the Chicago suburb of Aurora will be closed in support of the "Day Without Immigrants."
"This is a country of immigrants and a city of immigrants, and I love it when we stick up for each other here," Austin mayor Steve Adler told the Austin American-Statesman. More than 20 businesses there said they will close for the protests.
The Austin restaurant Vinaigrette told the newspaper it will open, but will donate 50 percent of its proceeds Thursday to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center to "stand with and support their friends, staff and neighbors on 'Day Without Immigrants Strike.'"
Carmen Guererro, an organizer with the Pennsylvania advocacy group Coalicion Fortaleza Latina, told Philly.com that about 20 businesses in the Philadelphia, Allentown, and King of Prussia areas have pledged to close.
