HBO announced Wednesday that a "Deadwood" movie will finally go into production this fall.
“I can finally-finally confirm we are greenlit on 'Deadwood' movie … it will shoot in October,” HBO programming President Casey Bloys said during the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Getting the original ensemble cast together for the film has been a “logistical nightmare,” Bloys added. That ensemble includes Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, Kim Dickens, John Hawkes, Robin Weigert, W. Earl Brown, Dayton Callie, Paula Malcomson, and Brad Dourif.
The question of a film capper to “Deadwood,” which ran from 2004 to 2006, has been asked of HBO executives for years.
“We’ve been asked the Deadwood question for 11 consecutive years,” quipped HBO Corporate Communications Chief Quentin Schaffer, EW reported.
Bloys said he’s looking for a spring premiere, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
David Milch, “Deadwood” creator, has been tapped to write the screenplay, and Daniel Minahan has signed on to direct.
When Bloys was asked for more details, he said only, "Let's take the green light and celebrate that."
“Deadwood” captured eight Emmy awards during its brief three-season run and ended on what many believed was an inconclusive note, leaving a devoted audience wanting more.
After a decade of starts and stops, fans of the series weren't necessarily buying the movie announcement. Others took the news at face value and rejoiced.
