Demi Lovato, the former child actress and Disney star who has morphed into a wildly popular pop singer, opened up about her "dark, deep" struggles with drugs, alcohol, and body image in this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly.

Lovato, 21, did a three-month stint in rehab in late 2010 for "physical and emotional issues" related to an eating disorder, and emerged as a new and improved role model for young girls. She admits, though, that it's easier to maintain the "I'm not a role model" mantra.

"I used to say that too," the "X-Factor" judge told EW. "That was my excuse to do whatever the f— I wanted and not give a s— about what other people thought. Then I ended up going through some stuff. I realized I'm never going to escape the fact that I'm in the public eye, so I might as well do the best I can."

Lovato, whose book of daily affirmations, "Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year," comes out next week, is also contemplating writing a tell-all memoir, but isn't sure how much she should give away.

"I'm battling with internal thoughts on how honest I should be," she told EW. "Yes, I've been very honest, but if people really knew how dark and deep my struggles got — not just with my eating disorder but with drugs and alcohol — they'd be really shocked. But I'll most likely end up saying everything. Maybe it'll help other people in the industry who are headed down the wrong path."
