A Democratic Party “war on whites” is behind attacks on Sen. Jeff Sessions as he goes through Senate confirmations for attorney general, says fellow Alabaman GOP Rep. Mo Brooks.
“It’s really about political power and racial division and what I refer to, on occasion, as the ‘war on whites,” Brooks said on WBHP 800 Alabama, according to The Hill. “And the Democrats are not shy about lying in order to achieve their political goals.”
“And if they have to besmirch the reputation of a good man, Jeff Sessions, in order to achieve their political goals, they, as a group, are not hesitant to do so,” Brooks said.
Senate confirmation hearings for those nominated to the president-elect Donald Trump's cabinet began on Tuesday and Sessions went first. He was greeted by two protesters dressed in white robes of Ku Klux Klan members, according to the Huffington Post.
The two were removed from the room after yelling at Sessions as he entered.
“What is this craziness? I’m a white man!” said one of the protesters. “You cannot take me out of here! I own this country! White people own this government!”
Protests repeatedly broke out in the room and the accusations of racism continued on Wednesday from elected African-Americans.
“They are trying to motivate the African-American vote to vote-bloc for Democrats by using every ‘Republican is a racist’ tool that they can envision,” Brooks said, per CNN. “Even if they have to lie about it.”
New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker pleaded with the Senate to reject Sessions.
Georgia Rep. John Lewis and Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Cedric Richmond each testified that Sessions' record on civil rights disqualifies him from serving as attorney general.
The three were added to the hearings at the request of top Democrats, said CNN, noting that Booker became the first sitting senator to testify against a fellow sitting senator at a confirmation hearing for a cabinet position.
