Singer Selena Gomez secretly checked herself into an Arizona rehab center shortly after canceling her Australian tour, spending two weeks at the facility,
according to celebrity gossip website TMZ.com. Was it because of Justin Bieber?
TMZ quoted sources who said Gomez went into rehab for problems including alcohol, marijuana and prescription Ambien. However, a Gomez representative told
the New York Daily News that the voluntary stint was "not for substance abuse."
According to TMZ, the former Disney star was also struggling with moving on from her on-again, off-again relationship with troubled pop singer Justin Bieber.
"Sources close to Gomez tell us ... people in Selena's camp went ballistic when they found out she was hanging out again with Justin," reported TMZ.com. "And saw photos of her joyriding with him on Segways. We're told that was the final straw – she checked into rehab immediately after that."
RadarOnline reported that Gomez checked into Dawn at The Meadows recovery facility in Wickenburg on Jan. 5. Dawn at The Meadows specializes in patients 18 to 26 years old who are struggling with emotional trauma, addiction or dual diagnosis concerns.
Gomez had planned big money concerts in Australia but slammed the brakes on those in December, telling her fans in a statement, according to the Daily News, that she "never wants to disappoint them."
"It has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be," said Gomez.
A source told RadarOnline that, at the time of the announcement, Gomez had been "partying very hard." Another source told RadarOnline: "With fame came a partying lifestyle."
RadarOnline reported that family and friends believed that her continued connection with Bieber was at the root of her problems.
"Selena came to understand just what a bad influence Justin had been on her life," one source told RadarOnline. "Their relationship left her broken-hearted."
Another RadarOnline source added: "I don't know whether Justin pushed her to drug use, but amongst their close knit group of friends, smoking was common place. Justin and Selena would smoke marijuana together regularly."
