DL Hughley said Caitlyn Jenner did not deserve to win the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPYs, and compared her looks to the famous Robin Williams character Mrs. Doubtfire.
A reporter from TMZ got the impromptu interview with the comedian and TV actor on Thursday on the streets of Manhattan.
"Well I think that it is named after Arthur Ashe," Hughley responded when the interviewers asked it Jenner deserved the award. "Arthur Ashe is from Richmond, Virginia. He was a symbol of courage, he fought the segregated south, a very segregated profession. He fought AIDS with dignity and honor and Caitlyn Jenner put on a dress. I don't think it’s the same thing."
Hughley said a more fitting choice for the courage award would have been Lauren Hill, a college basketball player who died recently of cancer.
The reporter then asked Hughley if he thought Jenner was beautiful.
"No — in like a Miss Doubtfire kind of way," he said.
"This week we had the media telling us that Caitlyn Jenner was beautiful and that Serena Williams looked like a man. That was a little weird to me. The man looks like a woman and the woman looks like a man? That’s ridiculous. I think Serena is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen on a tennis court and Bruce Jenner looks like every P.E. teacher I’ve ever had."
On Saturday, Hughley doubled down on his comments, tweeting a side-by-side photo of Jenner and Mrs. Doubtfire.
Many online supporters concurred with Hughley, while many others said he was way out of line, calling him "transphobic."
