Donovan McNabb, the former NFL quarterback turned analyst, issued a bizarre statement this week regarding his arrest on DUI charges late last month in Arizona.
McNabb, who quarterbacked the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl in 2005, was pulled over and arrested by Gilbert, Arizona, police before
midnight on June 28, according to Deadspin.com. Authorities claim that McNabb rear-ended another vehicle at a stoplight.
The police reported that McNabb "was impaired by alcohol and collided in a rear-end fashion with another vehicle which was stopped at a red traffic signal. Donovan was arrested for DUI at (11:58 p.m.) hours and transported to the Gilbert/Chandler Unified Holding Facility for processing, after which, he was cited and released," according to a statement.
The vehicle McNabb collided with was reportedly being driven by the wife of a Gila River Tribal police officer,
The Arizona Republic reported, citing the police report.
"While Donovan spoke, I noticed a strong, fruity odor on his breath," a Gilbert police officer wrote in the report. "I noticed Donovan's eyes were watery and very bloodshot and his speech was slurred."
The report did not specify if McNabb was given a field sobriety test or what his blood alcohol blood content level was.
On Tuesday, McNabb addressed the issue during the first hour of his NBC Sports Radio program
"PFT Live" with Mark Malone, according to NBC Sports.
"There was a story that was released, and I want everybody to be cognizant of it, because I am very aware of it, handling the matter at this particular point," he said. "But at this point, I have no further information, and as we continue on with the situation, then we'll let it handle as it will handle itself."
NBC Sports' Mike Florio pointed out that the arrest marks the second DUI for McNabb, who could be sentenced to jail time if found guilty.
"Obviously, McNabb isn't going to address the substance of the allegation, given that anything he says can be used against him in court," Florio said. "And with second-offense DUI in Arizona entailing a mandatory sentence of 90 days in jail, McNabb should do nothing to undermine his right to mount a vigorous defense in court."
